Alicia Zamora Noguera is a Nicaraguan
sociologist and visual artist with special
interest in xylography. As a cultural
administrator, she has organized various
urban art projects in Central America
such as October Murals 2005 and Kent
Explora Habitart 2003. In addition, since
2008, she has been organizing workshops
on audiovisual tools for women’s organizations
in the region.
As a cultural administrator, Alicia has
been working on the different phases of
the project De mi barrio a tu barrio, since
its inception. She has been involved in
its formulation, research, dissemination,
execution and has also been involved in
the processing of the feedback. The work
encompassed, among other things, prior
research in many of the countries participating
in the tour in order to be able to
provide the associates at the Goethe-
Institut with a schedule of the urban interventions based on the socio-cultural
context and on the specific reality of each
city. During the tour, Alicia wrote the daily
travel updates for the blog and assisted
with press and television publicity in the
Spanish-speaking countries.
Alicia complains about the chaotic
situation in her country but participates
in the struggle for change by using art as
an essential tool for this transformation
and by maintaining her sense of humour
in order to offer constructive criticism
and develop collective projects.
“The project with the Goethe-Institut
Mexiko was a valuable experience, an
event which mobilized and animated 80
artists in 8 countries. It is a project aimed
at recognizing and strengthening art produced
in the street, in a region which is
not mentioned in most of the books and
international research on urban art. When
Latin America is referenced, mention is
made only of Mexico and South America,
especially Brazil, Chile and Argentina.
They do not mention Central America and
the Caribbean or the complicated and
particular problems of street art which
is produced there. This situation, in my
opinion, distances us from the great
paradigms of urban art and makes us
different and authentic. This project and
book is our way of saying “Hey, look at
us! We can hold our own on the local and
international scene.”
